Anyone have any luck detecting them?

I've had lousy luck this month trying to get permission, and I've been shot down 3/3 times.
Guess I'll keep on keepin' on....

Any good hunting stories anyone?

Just keep on asking till ya get an ok. I have made some great finds at old one room school sites. Hey, if your not having any luck gaining permission at the school sites near ya hit some local old church lots.
My first old school house site was right up the road from me on King Road in Spring Arbor. Found 2 large cents there, S.L. quarter, a walking half and many indian heads and a few Barber dimes. The Spring Arbor Historical committe eventually rebuilt the school house and moved it. I have a display of some of the finds I made there at the new located old school house they turned into a museum. That was a fun site because I had permission anytime I wanted to and no one lived there at the time. I went there whenever I wanted and had a ball plus it was just up the road. Fun times. Go and ask till someone says yes. I'll go door knocking with ya somtime if ya want. Jim

All the 1 room schools around here (Barry County) are occupied by people and generally they are pretty trashed...others have disappeared - either burned down or moved. Haven't been able to find where they were.
Good luck finding ones that you can hunt.

I have detected a few.

One of the ones I got permission to detect...I found an 1899 Indianhead 1 inch deep less than 10 minutes into my day. The horrible part of this was that I only had 30 minutes to detect that day.

Went back a week later and the owner didnt want to let me detect again. Turns out that a few days after I left, someone broke into one of his out buildings and stole a can of gas. Apparently he was pissed off enough that he didn't want to let anyone back out onto the property. The ironic thing was that the neighbor saw 3 teenagers over there. Either way, I lost my permission.

The 2nd schoolhouse we detected was one that had been moved. The schoolhouse has been moved, but old maps showed us where it once stood. Now it a farm field. A friend and I got permission. We have only hunted it 5-6 times...maybe an hour or two each visit.

We have each found a few Indianheads and my buddy found a Barber Dime out there. But like I said...we have very little time out there. The house went out of commission in the Late 1950's, so anything you find will be old. The latest dated coin we have found so far was in the Late 40's.

So overall, I'd consider it a success.

Never quit knockin!!!!!!!!!

Keep at it and it will pay off, I have 3 one room schools less than 5 miles from my home and I find alot of great coins there every time I go.I just located another one this week that no longer stands and is being used as a farm field. I am sure I can get permission to hunt this site so be watching for my posts!

Good hunting
