Today I met up with two friends and I took them to where I dug the colonial shoe buckle two weeks ago. I figured that with three of us swingin' we should come up with something nice. The grass and weeds are still way too high to have much success at this spot. One friend ended up with a small bell of his own and the other found about 1/3 of a super sized crotal bell.(sorry no pics) My keeper for the day was a bell also. I am guessing that it is a cow bell of some sort. very well made, cast brass. I have seen others and they are usually made from a much lighter/thinner material. Also, cast into the front of the bell it looks like the letter "T" :dontknow:
Any comments on age?

Local legend here tells of our first settler, Samuel Davidson, his wife, daughter and slave moved to these exact mountains in the 1700's. Samuel had a few horses which he would tie similar bells around their necks so he would know where they were when he went to round them up. Not being very popular with the Cherokee that had already inhabited the area, caught on to his bell system for locating his horses. Mr. Davidson was stealing and lying to the Native Americans. One evening, a bell like yours was removed from one of the horses necks. The horse was safely taken away.
As the sun was going down, Mr. Davidson went looking for the horse. The clever Cherokee Indian gave the bell a jingle, and as Davidson went to get his horse, he lost the top of his head! :o
His wife, daughter and slave amazingly escaped through the mountains to the town of "Old Fort" where the fort gave refuge. Davidson's brother was a General during the Rev War. When word got back to him of his brothers death, Gen. Davidson formed a posse, headed to the mountains and massacred many Native Americans. :-\

I just thought you'd like some interesting reading about a bell. ;D

One of my favorite skits on Saturday Night Live...Walkens was one of the best guests on SNL.

Throw champagna in my face once, shame on you, throw champagna in my face twice, shame on me...
