IMG_2746.webpSo I received my first and only metal detector in my life this past Monday. Today I made my second trip out into my yard. In 15 minutes I found a coin which I cannot identify. I brought it to a friend of mine who is a nationally known expert in antiquities and discovered that I found a
1787 colonial penny. It's real beat up and very difficult to read. I will post a picture later on when I get home from work. Three days of owning a metal detector and I find this. Boy this is a fun hobby.
Just edited and added photos

if that doesn't get you hooked i dunno what will. good job and welcome to the hobby

There's only one coin that looks like that and has a 1787 date. Fugio Cent. Only year it was made. Congrats on a great find. The fugio was the first US coin to say United States on it.

Thanks for the info. In terms of "rare" would this qualify? My guess is because of the quality of the coin it would not be worth much monetarily but I wouldn't sell it regardless

Go buy a lottery ticket NOW! You are the luckiest person that I have seen in a long time.

Congratulations on an epic find!

Congrats on the find! Bet your ready to go back out now and see what else is out there. Good Luck!:icon_thumright:

I was only out 10 minutes when I found the coin. Then found another target next to it and got 6 inches down but still couldn't find it. Had to leave the hole open because I had to go to work. I can't wait to see what's in that new hole. I'm guessing I have a maximum of three hours total on the machine.

Hey TooManyHobbies, from your answer, I take it that not only is this limited issue but possibly limited is area of issue? Maybe Northeastern US? Eastern US? Heard of it, never seen one, Hammer287 hit a jackpot first time out!

I just spoke with my friend and he reminded me it was New York

Very cool find!

I don't know if it's an area thing. It can't be too rare...I found one in 2015. I'm not that lucky. ;) Mine was in worse shape than the one above. Only the chain was really visiable, with 178* barely visiable under a magnifying glass. A friend of mine also found one or two. They're out there.

RedBook says they were coined in New Haven, CT. No mintage number is listed, but the Board of Treasury be authorized to contract for 300 tons of copper coin of the federal standard.

If you think that's good, just wait until you find your first pull tab, those suckers are awesome!! :laughing7::laughing7:

Seriously though, great find!

Congrats on a great find! That's an old one for sure. You might want to slow down, you've raised the bar pretty high starting out....:icon_thumleft:

Surprisingly enough on my first hunt this past Monday I went to a freshwater beach and only found one pulltab

Wow...what a find for a newbie. You should officially have the detecting bug now. :)

Don't care if it was your first time out or you're thousandth time out. Don't care if it was you're first target or you're millionth. That my friend, is a very special coin. Congratulations and hope you find more just like that.

That's like a fish swallowing the hook all the way down into it's stomach. You'll have to get back out there and find whatever else might be related to this wonderful piece of history. I love the coin design as well. "We Are One" & "Mind Your Business". Gotta dig that for sure. Post any other cool old stuff you get. Congrats as well.
