Found this at my parents 1906 Victorian house. My guess is Korean but have no clue.

because that's the way someone liked them.. sorry, just had to say that
 

they are like cents are today -- very low value coins --the square hole purpose is two fold ---one it saves some metal and two it allows them to be strung on strings in lots of 100 ....
