Oval brass, civil war?

Found near some civil war bullets in Louisiana. It's brass not sure what it is.

Looks similar to some Victorian age sash buckles - I faintly see what look to be solder marks or iron attachment marks on the reverse that would attach to either an iron bar or attachment points to an additional loop (shadowed behind). Not 100% positive.

It did have a very small amount of iron on the back that came off as soon as I pulled it out of the ground.
