I just picked up my new detector today. while I was playing around with it I put the coil on my floor to try to ground balance I got a loud squeal and the display said overload. Since then Im afraid to turn it on again. Any help would be appreciated. The detector is an MXT PRO.

That happened to me once with my Ace 250. I got a continuous squeal after I turned it on in the house. I just removed the batteries, re-installed them and turned it back on. Worked fine ever since. Shouldn't be a problem with your detector either after you take the batteries out and re-install them.

Your floor is full of nails, screws and who knows what other kinds of metal.....go outside!

If you put it on the floor it's going to pick up every nail, screw, pipe, wire and everything else in and under the floor. You need to do it outside.

Maybe it's picking up metal beams, pipes or ducts in your house which are big enough to send it into overload. Just take it outside.

no need to take the batteries out , just take it outside away from metal in your floor!

Yep we radiant heat in the floor, at lest the pipes are still there, detector screams like a banshee if I turn it on in the house!

yup can't use them indoors....mine will go crazy on my carpeted concrete floor in my basement, why you ask....well i'm thinking it has to do with re-bar in the concrete of course:icon_scratch:

and my favorite experience when starting out detecting was......Never wear steel toed shoes while metal detecting!
