Got off work today at 7am... been metal detecting ever since. We found some awesome relics today. Does anyone have any info on the hatchet looking tool? The way it’s made has us clueless. Also the silver-bell? Is this Off an old phone? ... the one alone in my hand says: PATD 1856. Anyone have any ideas on what this is? Also the locket still swivles.. but sadly no markings. Thanks everyone

Nice finds! I think that is an old shingle hammer. Use the hatchet side to split the wooden shakes then nail them in place. There are many examples online.

Congrats on the nice finds! I enjoy working the night shift, especially during detecting season. Not tired after work- go detecting. Want to sleep after work- sleep then go detecting. I went out this morning also, but didn't find much.

That ax kinda looked like a paint scraper at first. Sweet overall buckle! Phone bell or clock alarm bell maybe. I miss the night shift!

The hatchet was commonly carried during the CW. It was light and could be used on kindling and so on. It is sometimes referred to as a roofing hatchet and usually has a slot in the blade to pull nails. There is a website that shows it among others. I will find it. The more modern version has a different shape to the head. (Usually straight ) they have been around since the early 1800’s.
