Detected some land near Woodstock, VT today. Other than a few beer caps, 9mm and .32 auto shell casings, a .32 Winchester special casing, and $.12 in clad, I found an ox shoe.

Can anyone give me an idea on the age of the shoe?

This brings up an interesting question. I've got piles of oxen shoes. Some are extremely crude and are likely 17th century. Others look more uniform like they could be machine made. Guessing yours is one of the newer ones as it's not as crude and some of the older ones. The tough part is that they were used into the 1900s in New England. But in most places fell out of favor around 1850. I'd love to know how old some of mine are

I'm almost positive this one is machine made. My guess was 20th century. I really have no history of the area other than it was used to pasture dairy cows about 25 years ago.

Ok jude you've got me curious now. Most of mine came from 1700s site. But I'm really curious to know if there's a solid way to date them. There's prob 80 of them in my basement. Here's a few

I plan on doing electrolysis on mine and putting them in displays. They're a cool piece of history in my opinion

Congratualtions on the Ox shoe, it's in great condition! :occasion14:

I sure think those are cool! They would make great display pieces!
