Paid 25-cents for 91-cents - CASH. Here's how...

Today, I paid 25-cents for a shamrock-shaped wooden trivet that has embedded 91-cents in coins. A Half-dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, penny. All dated 1930 except for 1965, 50-cent piece. The center commemorative plate: "Margie; Happy 50th, Dec 18, 1980". I'm curious why the 50cent piece is yellowish or gold toned. ??

Excellent score,, the face value may be 91 cents but you could get a lot more selling them individually in coin folders.

Cool find. Where'd ya get at, a yard sale? It's more than likely a gold plated Kennedy Half. I found many when I used to coin roll hunt.
It is a 50th birthday plaque, so 50 Golden Years! I wonder if the maker knew they could have got a 1980 Gold plated one, to go with the rest of the 50 year theme.

Found this piece in a recycling bin.
Now, I think I will try to extract the coins. Keep your fingers crossed.

Great find. I think it was varnished or poly'd over, and that the Kennedy half was a later replacement for the original. if it's not varnish or poly then it just might be oil and smoke discoloring the coins. In any case, I would yank them out and try to clean them up.

The Kennedy was most likely gold plated

So sad, someone made that for the person they loved and that person probably treasured it beyond money. Now they are gone and someone else thew it in the trash bend. Glad you found it tho......

UPDATING.... I had a friend cut the wood and the coins popped out without a struggle. There is some residual goo on the coins but they can be cleaned up. The Kennedy half dollar is shiny as new and it is definitely an interesting golden-toned color. I don't know a thing about coins other than I got my money's worth.
