So far as I have been able to research the only place in Nevada where marble was commercially quarried . Marble was found on Bare Mountain in 1908 but it would take a few more years to get things rolling . In 1911 the American Carrara Marble Company was formed and things began to take shape . A 3 mile long counter balance railroad was built ( think cuckoo clock ) . It worked like this . There were 2 flat cars , one at the top and one at the bottom . The one on top was loaded huge marble blocks cut from the quarry . The one on the bottom was loaded with men and equipment . The heaver car on top would pull the lighter car on the bottom to the top as it was going down . Once at the bottom the blocks were unloaded and sent to the finishing plant where they would be cut to size and polished . Today the first ruins you will encounter when you pull off US 95 are those of the finishing plant . To the right about a 100 yards away are the remains of the icehouse and garage . Look closely around the finishing plant and you might find a nice polished piece of Carrara blue marble . In part # 2 we will go to town ! . Thanks a heap for coming along ! Hope you had a good time ! Hoss

The concrete structures that you may find 1 1/2 miles to the north of Carrara were never part of the marble company town; they are remnants of a cement company of Philippine ownership which abandoned its buildings early in 1936 before production began. The town had a baseball diamond, a town pool, hotel, restaurant and other attractions where you might find artifacts with a MD.
Good luck,
Don......
