Metal Detecting
Took the short drive ( 25 min. ) to Pawleys today, to check on this beach project. Interesting. I hadn't seen one in action before.

Note the ship on the left, over 2 miles offshore. That's where they're dredging the sand from, and pumping it here, in the pic, through huge pipes laid across the sea floor. The "mushroom" in the center is actually the fountain of sand and water shooting up out of the pipe end. All that equipment was busy pushing the sand around.

Shell hunters have been having a good time.

That's a great pic looks gorgeous wish I was there

Here in NJ they dredged and replenished but they sent WW1 & WW2 ordnance onto the beaches from the Fort Hancock Proving Ground. They had to haul megatons of dredged sand off the beaches after people and detectorists were digging things up. I went detecting to one of the beaches that was supposed to be safe and I dug down and saw something old oblong and rusty that scared the hell out of me so I left and called the PD. Don't know what happened. Also found a modern Ruger pistol on Belmar beach at the water line. PD has that one. I would love to be the first one to detect a replenished safe beach. Google 'New Jersey dredging bomb'.

One of my friends grandmothers worked for canal dredgers off the Ga/SC coast, he used to walk the tailings (idk if thats what they're called) and has several hand sized megladon teeth he found.

I’ve looked at pawleys for vacations, but never went
Good spot?

The beach has several public access points, with limited parking, and a huge public beach area at the south end with parking, and porta-potties in season. Zero amenities at the beaches, bring your own everything. Rarely crowded, although getting a parking spot at times is tough. Beaches are CLEAN. In fact, the few times metal detecting, I was hard pressed to dig trash.

Now it's under 10-12 feet of dredged shell sand, and no access at the working areas.

I will try to get out there with detector asap. My F75 does OK in damp and dry sand, but salt water is just one big overload signal.

The megalodon teeth are found down near Chas. and south of there, and maybe up near Myrtle Beach. I have found a few near Charleston.

I usually get a condo on the beach, but I don’t care for the high rises

Pawleys has a bunch of rentals...all houses, B&B's, that I have seen. There is one hotel I think, 3 stories.

Interesting project.

They do that in Florida all the time. It's a sore spot with most folks here on the island. The beaches will take care of themselves but rich beach- front condo & homeowners cry about erosion. They have the local politicians ( money?) ears and miraculously every few years they get a new beach. It messes up the fishing and the water is dirty for months.
Turtles are a big deal here and soon I think the turtle people will get it stopped. They do all the work in the winter when there are no turtles nesting but the sand is different and sometimes the nests in the spring fail because the little critters cannot dig out the hard packed " new" sand.
