People new to detecting...worse when it's relation.

I'm all for people getting into the wonderful world of metal detecting. My sisters husband picked up a detector to join us on our ventures. I figured it would take him a little while to get the hang of it and I was right. He is cutting pizza pan size plugs...doesn't put all the dirt back in the hole, and is completely clueless when we try to teach him the proper methods. It's really starting to piss me off as I don't want to lose detecting areas because of his caveman methods. Just wanted to get that off my chest.

Doh! i feel for ya, man. I don't really know WHAT to say that would help ya here, except to try to discourage him and hope he gets bored with it before he does TO much damage,....

know where youre coming from
had relatives get into hobby for the wrong reason
would ask other family members where i was going - then go into my spots
hammer them while i was at work all week
make a mess - clean them out and when i would go back
on my days off - nothing left
then a lot of times they would rub what they found at my spots in my face
I dont talk to that side of the family any more

I would throwing hooks and uppercuts and stacking those people like wood.

Tell him. Nicely at first, perhaps even twice. Then... don't mince words. He needs to know the drill and the scrutiny we are all under. If he can't get his act together he needs to go home. Sucks ya can pick yer friends but that relative deal is a real crap shoot.

Explain to him that if he is going to hunt with you he has to learn and use the proper method of recovery of a target. If he argues or blows it off then just don't take him with you..... You wouldn't take someone fishing with you that continued to throw all the cooler trash in the water while you were fishing.....

Yeah, its up to you if hes is going to be with you to set the rules, if he dont want to follow the rules then let him know he wont be welcome to join you, make sure you let him know why its important and that we dont need any new laws here banning metal detecting especially since here in Michigan they already got enough laws against panning, sluicing and dredging, When I invite friends up to my cabin for deer season or book groups for guide service I let them know up front what I expect from them and if any of them break any one of my rules they dont ever to get to come back.
