CW artillery shells sure do come in some interesting shapes .. That Burton shell resembles some sort of short gas cylinder.

After seeing your video I was curious about Civil War ordnances since I know little about them. I found a great site that shows the different ordnances used by the north and south.

Found this article about a Civil War ordnance collector who died in 2008 more then 140 yrs after the end of the war. He was disarming some type of Civil War ordnance when it exploded. They actually found shrapnel 1/4 mile away from his home. First I’ve heard that these things can still be armed. Still, a very cool find!

Not me, but the drill will be utilized. A Burton had a paper time fuse (missing now) which means moisture has permeated the shell. It will be immersed in water for a few days to insure saturation, then the fuse housing will be drilled slowly, cooling it with water and resoaking to wet any remaining powder. Then the powder will be flushed out.
