I dont know if I posted this before but I found this wallet and badge while cleaning out an abandoned warehouse about 4 years ago. Is this a defunct Florida Concealed Weapons Permit badge or are they still used today? Is it privately made or official? Are these good numbers? Any idea of age?

It seems to be gold plated and says 390 GA-REL on the back.

Yep, IMHO, definitely a stoopid idea...

From the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Licensing:

No, the Division does not endorse these badges, but they are not illegal. There is nothing in Florida law that specifically prohibits companies from offering to sell these badges to Florida license holders, nor is there any provision that prohibits license holders from carrying such badges.

License holders should be aware that the use of official badges is prohibited in Florida Statutes in a couple of places. Section 30.46 specifies that a badge in the shape of a five-pointed star can be used by Florida sheriffs and deputy sheriffs only. Section 843.085 makes it unlawful to wear or display any authorized indicia of authority (including any badge) which could deceive a reasonable person into believing that such item is authorized by any federal, state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency.

Licensees should also take note that these badges do not substitute for identification or confirmation of your status as a holder of a Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License. Only the license issued by the Division will serve as a means of identifying a citizen as a license holder.

Good information whynot. Thanks. I would imagine since I dont have a CW permit yet and it wouldnt match my number anyway, I am possibly in illegal possession. I think I should destroy it.

I thought if it was old I could sell it. I notice defunct official badges are legal to sell on eBay.

Maybe Ill just bury it and let some future MDer find it. ;D

Although the image on the badge is not the Great Seal of Florida (It is illegal to put that on a civilian badge), some of the characteristics of the image tell me that it is pre 1985, especially the" mountains" in the background. Read this and tell me what you think-http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/seals/fl_seal.htm

Id like to see the old seal to compare but you could be right about the pre 1985 mountain. Thanks. :icon_thumright:

The seal was changed 4 times. http://www.jstor.org/pss/30138842

The badge was made in March of 1990. When a badge is engraved with the custom lettering it is stamped with the hallmark and then the month and the year. It was make by a company in Providence, Rhode Island, Ga-rel Mfg. Company. Ga-rel has been in around for over 60 years. Badges are Ordered through dealers and then sold to individuals. The badge is made out of brass and then plated with nickle and then gold.

Looks like something an over-zealous permit carrier would flash around. I doubt you would be in any trouble for possessing it as it doesn't carry any more authority than a kids toy badge. If you were to try wearing or flashing it as if you did have some legal authority over someone would be when you got into trouble.

eh - bury it in a cache - and when someone finally does find it - it will be antique...
