Petrified Wood

I found this piece of p-wood this past summer on a Potomac River creek. I finally got around to cutting it and was very surprised to see the interior color.

Does anyone know why the inside (heart wood) petrified black and the outside is a lighter color?

When carbon is mixed into the water where the wood is submerged, it will create black.
