The fork or knife idea is good but is there a tang going up the wood(handle) if not how did it stay together? just compression? I think it wouldn't be very strong to have stayed together this long.If just compression held the metal to wood.

It will be a fork or knife or spoon handle. I have found them with the implement broke off and just the handle. I found a bunch in a swimming hole once that apparently yankee soldiers (just my guess) broke all the ends off of and threw them in the river, I saved one and it is in a bottle of river water now sitting in the kitchen window...d2

Welp...
It goes just like counting...
1-2-3-4..in forks... that is number of prongs...
1 being oldest...
2 prongs very very old....
3 being 17-18oo's...
20th century are four prongs... GENERAL guideline...

So... with that said... yours is somewhere in the early to mid 1800's ... My GUESS only.
