Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Hi friends, metal detecting has been few and far between due to work schedules, but got out today for an hour or two. Found a very old pewter spoon in pieces, a neat looking brass piece (any ideas?), a very smooth bullet, and a beautiful pewter button (tombac?). Nothing too exciting--even an old whisk! Hope you are all well. Weather is finally breaking here! -Lisa & John

Well that's a wonderful pewter rat-tail spoon for starters. Most definitely an 18th Century find, and likely on the earlier half. The button is nice but I can't see it that well. Also a nice find. Congrats Lisa.

Nice finds! The button could be white tombac. Made with arsenic (don't put it in your mouth). Also, could the brass piece be the tongue half of a two piece buckle?

Hey Steve, thanks! I was trying to find that awesome antique spoon website that someone on here shared, but I couldn't. I think that's where I heard the term "rat tail"--glad you mentioned it! That's exactly right! Hope you're making good finds, friend. Thanks for commenting. -L&J

Hi Frisco, white tombac? That's a new term to me! We were wondering why this one was so bright--thought it was silver because of that. Definitely won't be tasting this one, just in case. ;-). Ya, the brass piece is interesting. Not sure what it is--looks like a screw belonged in the middle of the design part. It doesn't look like anything else we've dug so far. Thanks for your thoughts. -L&J

Yes made from Tombac not Pewter.

Too bad that spoon is busted up. Those rat tails are a nice find. Good luck today
