🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Pewter button?

Found today in central Va on a property that has activity from the early/mid 1700s. Spot I was at is a long way from where anything (buildings) was known to be. Found a square nail or two and a plain flat button close by.

99% certain it's pewter, but I’m guessing on the button part. It’s seen better days for sure.

Thoughts?

Anyone have recommendations on how to preserve it? I’m thinking polyurethane?

Looks like it may be the remains of a tomback button to me. I use a 50/50 mix of Elmer's glue and water to coat my colonial relics. It can be easily removed.
