Found in 10" in the front lawn of a 1742 colonial home in the Hudson Valley, NY. Any thoughts? Thanks! GD

Went back and did the front yard again only to find the BASE ... and the HINGED SUPPORT .... and when the pieces are "assembled....this is what the whole thing looked like .... complete with the words stamped into the base "P KAFFMANN - FINE ARTS - 1242 BROADWAY - NEW YORK" Can't find anything on the place though!

There's no business listed at that address in the Yellow Pages. All I can find for P Kaufmann is a well known fabric producer.

Maybe it is part of a victorian compact?

The words "Fine Arts" make me think of a small portrait, so maybe a small portrait frame. I think miniature portraits were common in the 18th century...before photography made them obsolete. Just a guess, take it as such.

My vote is for a mirror.

I've always thought that a miniature was REALLY small - maybe 3 x 5 inches?

Here's one definition of "miniature" from this site: http://www.art-in-miniature.org/whatmin.htm

The size of a miniature is traditionally described as small enough to carry in a person's hand, pocket or bag.

my 2¢ worth, anyway
