Yes a pinpointer is a necessary item, It helps find the target faster!!!! Garrett propointer is My choice!!! It sounds off faster and vibrates more the closer you get to the target allot of times you don't even have to dig to recover the target

Pinpointers are too easy to lose, I got myself a DX-1 probe, it's fixed to the detector, I'll never look back...

I've been digging targets for going on 30-years and NEVER owned a pinpointer, as I felt I never needed one. I really have to question spending $125.00 on a tool that may save me, what, three-minutes-an-hour? Frankly, I think a pinpointer is just another "gadget." I KNOW I will catch a lot of heat for my views on this subject. To me it is like owning a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. You have the bike, but now you need the saddlebags; and the jacket; and the... it goes on and on. Take that $125.00 and invest it in research tools - My two-cents.

Go to Harbor Freight and pick up one of these for $17

They're surprisingly decent.
It will allow you to actually use a working pinpointer to determine if it's a needed part of your kit or not without having to jump head first into an expensive unit... If you like it, then you might consider upgrading to a better propointer/probe- but really, that little unit ain't half bad, is dirt cheap and even if you upgrade, I betcha still keep it as a low cost, functional backup...

by all means YES!!!! Pinpointers will save you a lot of time. The Garret Pro Pointer is the best hand held for about $125. Even the Harbor Freight for about $17 is better than nothing. The Sun Ray DX-1 is very good as well as it is already attached to the machine. Most people who hunt for coins and relics will use a pinpointer. I believe it is a very important part of your equipment.

Pinpointer speeds up the recovery of a target which means you get to move on to the next target that much faster which means more total targets for the day...

It is like hunting the wetsand and digging with a garden trowel for recovery, no doubt you can dig your target with a garden trowel, but a good scoop speeds the recovery and makes the task so much easier and quicker and allows you to move on to your next target....

Save 3 mins a target and dig 30 targets in a 6 hour hunt, you save 90 minutes, means you get 90 more minutes of hunting that day alone....

Terry, if your driving between Los Angeles and Dallas does your car have to have a radio or cruise control to make the trip, no.....But it sure makes the trip a lot easier and more enjoyable than going with out one....

I detected for years without one but after I bought one I couldn't believe the time it saved me, I don't know how many holes I probably filled back up because I couldn't find the target, probably stuck in the side of the hole.

Garrett Propointer = Best money ever spent on detecting accessories

Yer gunna like it, but beware... It will inevitably lead to a Propointer, as sure as the sun rises :D

I have been through two Harbor Freight pinpointers. Yes, they work, but you can't be real rough with them. If you don't mind replacing them, I guess you could go through maybe 8 for the price of a Garrett pro pointer. But, I bought on and can't bear to go out without it! I wrapped some hot pink duck tape around part of it so it sticks out like a sore thumb if I set it down and walk away. Worth every penny to go ahead and get the Garrett!

I have won a few pinpointers as prizes in hunts before but never used one. Never really felt the need to use one.

The Garrett is definitely the better piece of kit, but the Cen Tech is perfectly adequate for an introductory unit, or for a cheap spare to let beginners use, etc.

I'm pretty rough on gear, but have a hard time being "rough" on a pinpointer. It just sits in the belt until you take it out and start sticking the probe in the dirt, then put it back. I did wrap the probe and tip with duct tape just to help reduce probe wear and gave the housing seam a run with electrical tape to seal it up, but so far, my one and only has been a champ... but yes, it's a HF product, meaning that quality control can be erratic.

Still, I think it's a great intro unit given what it can do and what it costs...

don't do it... get the Garrett pro pointer... I promise it will make all the difference... if you get anything less you'll just be disappointed... and besides if you are disappointed with the pro pointer you can always sell it and get your money back someone will buy it... but you won't be! I know this for a fact!

that goes for you too BOBO

I lied! Went to get this and they want $9.00 to ship it. I used that as an excuse NOT to buy it. I just can't do it...

Just purchased my first detector and wish I knew about the pinpointer ahead of time. Guess I didn't research enough. When my b-day rolls around in Sept. I know what I'll be getting. After two weeks I've learned that they are a must!!!

If I'm in that big of a hurry, I probably don't need to be out detecting.
A pin pointer is not a necessity for me. It would be a nice tool to have, but you can learn to pin point with your detector.
