pinpointing and pinpointers

Some folks use pinpointers, although I've gone 16 years without one and done just fine. To me, they come in handy once in a while, but they're expensive and just one more thing to lose. The silver can be pinpointed in the normal disc mode. To practice this, take a few coins and tape them index cards. Practice pinpointing around your house this winter. If you need a little more precise pinpointing, switch the toggle switch to the "all metal" mode. The Silver seems to require just a hair less motion on all metal, so you'll be able to slow the sweep down even more.

It takes a little practice, but it isn't that bad.

I would NOT hunt with my Deleon without a pinpointer. Tried it and it liked to drive me nutZZZZZ.

The Deleon finds things that are so small and dirt colored that you would never find it without a pinpointer.

I use a Whites Bullseye II.

I am with you eagle. I have a Tesoro Cortez and an ACE 250. Both are easy to pp but if you are off a quarter of an inch, then it will drive you crazy. I use an automax probe that came with the ACE. I dont go out without it.

To each his own on using a pinpointer--but a pinpointer will not pinpoint the target for the initial hole (even though they can be handy after you cut the plug). The first question asked above was basically "how do you pinpoint with the silver?" Keep in mind , findit, that a handheld pinpointer cannot do this for you.

Best Wishes,

I like my pinpointer. It would work even better if I quit forgetting to take it with me.

Thanks buckleboy, but now I am comfused.I see your point if I can pinpoint with the coil what's the point( no pun intended). But if I did want one for the convienence after the hole, is there one that works on tesoro's, or do you need a handheld one?
And if so what is a good inexpensive one?

Also, just slow your sweep speed and X the spot.

I'm not saying that there is no point if you pinpoint with the coil--what I'm saying is that you must learn to pinpoint with the coil--because the pinpointer can't do that. What it can do is help you locate the target after you've already dug the hole. I thought part of your question was about how to pinpoint with the coil--but maybe I'm confused here too ???

I have a Sunray on my Explorer and I hated it at first but now it is, I realize, a great piece of equipment.

BB is correct in the fact that you have to narrow down the target but a pinpointer can also help you keep from making bigger holes than is necessary. Some of the places I hunt you have to make SMALL holes and it is hard without the pinpointer sometimes. But the Tesoro line of detectors are very easy to pinpoint with so BB is correct in the fact that a pinpointer is an extra tool that is necessary but is nice to have.

I got my Bullseye II for $50 from the local Whites dealer. He bought a bunch for Christmas hoping to sell them and he didn't so he sold me one for that price. You should always try to negotiate a deal.

It seems my Tesoro machines pinpoint within an inch, and my ability to pinpoint with the Little Yeller Feller is improving... I hope to get a pinpointer soon to cut down the time spent chasing something small and clumped in dirt through a pile of it...

Went out last night with the ground frozen! Without a pinpointer I would have had some real problems finding some of the items I found.

I agree with Buckleboy. There have been times when a pinpointer would have come in handy. But when I go relic hunting I've already got enough junk strapped to me that I really need, so a pinpointer just has no place. I always pinpoint well with my detector, but there are occasions when I'm looking for a small object in the dirt when a pinpointer would help. But generally they turn out to be BB's anyway, never buttons or bullets.
