Hey all,
I'm sure this has been asked before, so if your tired of answering, please
post the links of where this has been discussed before.
What are some tricks to pinpointing with the DD coil?
I've been using Whites machines for the last 20 years, and have decided
to try something different, and I chose Minelab. I've got a Soveriegn, a Quattro,
and I just got the X-Terra 70. I havn't been able to get out and do alot of
hunting in the last few years, as I have been building a new business. The
machines are working fine, but I just would like to learn some tricks for
easier pinpointing with the DD coil.
Happy hunting, and may the next clod of dirt wink gold at you.

Hello

I can relate. I came from a White's XLT before purchasing my new SE. The pinpoint threw me off until I got the hang of it.. and now I officially got the hang of it.

What I do...
Pinpoint left to right slowly. Get the strongest signal. Once I isolate the left to right center. I slide the coil front to back until I get the strongest tone on that line. That'll be your absolute center.

You can also slide the coil from top to bottom (after you isolate the left to right center). Once the signal stops.. your pinpoint is the point right before the signal cuts out. The double D coil is hot on the strip in the middle.. that's what threw me off.

Remember to practice on your yard first before doing anything serious. Once you get use to the center strip being hot, pinpointing comes fast and easy.

Hope this helps.

This throws a lot of hunters off and it couldn't be easier if you remember that you don't need to use the center of the coil. The DD coil is hot right in the strip down the middle. What I do when I get a hit is to pull the coil back toward me and slide it forward slowly. When it beeps again the target is near the front edge. You can further narrow it down by coming at it from the side and the target will always be at either the head or heel of the coil.
Practice on a clean piece of ground with a coin on top.

like Sandman said,

If you back off the object while making short side
by side strokes, & the signal Disappears.
stop. & move forward till you get your first beep.

If shallow it will be just in front of the coil tip.

If the object is Deep, it will be just under the coil tip.

Just turn 90 Degrees remembering the spot
and narrow it down, by doing the same.

Or buy a Sunray probe ;)

Thanks for the info! I'll have to get out with the Quattro and give the tips a whirl.
If I can get up and down. I havn't detected in a couple of years, and I got out for
a few hours on Sunday. I'm only 47 but today my legs feel like they are 90!! Gotta
get back into shape... to much sitting at the computer. :)
Thanks again guys!! HH Slabman

I have the DD coils (8" & 10") for my Musky. I never go into pinpoint mode. I leave it in motion seek and "X" the target as mentioned above. As I fast swipe (I'm a slow sweeper by habit) I spot on the ground where the "beep" is centered, I then sweep quickly in a perpendicular path to the original sweep while keeping my eye on the spot. I will usually have to shift my focus back or forward. I then tilt the "X" by 45º and repeat. Sweeping it fast also allows you to "look through" the coil and focus on the spot. Once I have the spot (clover leaf, blade of grass, tiny leaf piece, etc.) marked visually I lift the coil gradually while sweeping and that gives me a depth clue. Without ever having taken my eye off the spot I kneel down, set the detector aside and flip a "U" shaped plug over to reveal the hole ("U" shaped plugs heal back quicker IME) . Or the target if I'm lucky. I have a little Merlin handheld that I use from there on.

This may sound like I've had too much Bushmills and coffee, but what is the defintion of DD coil?

Hi,
Well, to be very simple, a DD coil works like 2 "D's" back to back. If you look at the coil, it's a circle with a line down
the middle. That line down the middle is the "hot" part of the coil. It sends down a signal in the shape of a book, about
3" inches wide, and the length of the coil. You get much better ground coverage with a Double D. The most common
coil is the "concentric" coil. It sends a signal into the ground in a cone shape. If your using a 9" inch coil, the signal at
the top of the ground is 9" inches across, but down 8 or 9 inches the signal is the size of a 50 cent piece. Concentric
coils can pinpoint on the head of a pin, where Double D's are a bit more tricky. I was just fishing around for any good
techniques to make it a bit easier.

using the x method I can find a target down to 4" with a screwdriver in less than 15 sec. most times. to me its the easiest coil to pinpoint with.even a target right on top of the ground cover by grass can be pinpoined dead on

You also have to change the position of the detector 90º, not just push and pull to form the "X". The DD coil has a long and deep but narrow sweet spot.
