The Minelab DD coil pinpoints like a DD coil. This means, the pattern is down the center like a wiper with a depth almost flat with only the heel and toe of the signal showing a rounding (front and back edge). The manual says to enter the pinpointing mode and move the coil over the target noting the loudest sound, this is the first line (same as the center of the coil). Turn 90 Degrees and do the same, the x made by both lines marks the spot. I have found that a coin on it's side may pinpoint off center. I also find that if I can raise the coil a little it helps. Sometimes a deep or weak signal does not allow this.
A second method is the wiggle method. I find if the signal is not deep and or the ground is easy to dig (sandy soil or an open farm field) this method works well. For this mode you do not need to be in pinpointing mode. Simply place your detector over the target and wiggle the coil a couple of inches (side to side) while pulling the coil towards you a little with each wiggle. When the detector goes quiet the target is in line just off or near the edge of the coil. If you test your detectors response before trying this method you can see the exact point your detector drops out making it easier to pinpoint. With practice I can pinpoint to the size of a quarter. I check this by using a pinpointer on shallow targets. I make a game out of it along with trying to ID the target and guess the depth. This past weekend I got about 9 out of 10 targets correct. This was a target rich area with 200 + targets.
