pipsico hunt?

Ann, Matt, Dave, correct me if I am wrong...

William Dillard, born ~1810, moved to Surry County between 1830-1840.

Married Rebecca Spratley, daughter of John Spratley

In the 1860 census, there were 13 people living in the Dillard home!!!! Rebecca's family, mother, brothers, and sisters moved in with them. The house MUST have been large considering there were so many people able to live there. Either that, or it was pretty cramped.

Is this the correct Dillard family?

I don't have my research with me, but I think that's the correct family. Check for the 1850 Surry county slave census as well - 40 slaves owned by Wm. Dillard!

I also read that the Dillard house was used as a private school after the CW.

I saw that, but it said Wm. Dillard lived in Amherst County, which is many counties away. Could me the same Dillard, but I also spotted several Dillard listed on the 1864 atlas map. Have you seen that map? Though it may not be to scale, it seems to suggest that the Dillard house was further south than we thought, closer to the entrance to Camp Kiwanis.

From the Surry County historical society website:

"A Description of Surry County in 1860", was written over 3/4 of a century ago by Surry County lawyer, Mr. T. N. Crymes. Society member Sarah Rowell Johnson copied it in 1929... In 1860 there were both private and public schools. There was a private school at Captain Dillard's.

OK, I was wrong. It was a school BEFORE the CW.

I saw the 1864 map as well as another (maybe two others) from the Civil War. They all show the Dillard house closer to the main road. But scale is difficult to determine. Jim tried to over lay a modern map with one of the old ones and the roads weren't even close - although it gave a general idea of distance and intersection. So I guess back then it was better than no map at all..

Anyway, the old maps gave us enough info to hunt where we found the relics. I'm interested in the "curious spot" on the '37 photo that is between where we hunted and the main road. I'm hoping it was the location of the main house.

SamN....here's some data I found regarding 44...

"..........The Virginia Beach Expressway (also known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway) was a 12-mile (19.3 km) limited access highway built to Interstate Highway standards extending between the independent cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Until 1999, it was signed as State Route 44.

Built and funded with toll revenue bonds, it opened on December 1, 1967 as SR 44. The Expressway ran from an interchange with Interstate 64 and Interstate 264 in Norfolk almost due east to the oceanfront area of Virginia Beach. The original road had 4 lanes (2 each way). It was widened to 6 lanes in the 1980s, and to 8 lanes in the early 1990s.

While tolls existed, there were two toll rates, depending on whether or not you passed the main toll barrier between Rosemont Road and Independence Boulevard on your trip. If you exited before the main barrier or entered beyond it, you would need to pass a small row of automated, ungated toll collectors where you are supposed to pay the reduced toll. Attempting to drive past without paying would result in an alarm bell ringing. Police were instructed to stop motorists who attempted this if they saw it........."

Is this what you were looking for?

Yes, thanks annmarie, I dont rember the two lane version of the highway.

SamN...I've been here since 1978 and I don't remember the 2-lane each side either....I always remember it 3 across each way...unless, you know where the Pavalion is (I believe they call it the Convention Center now)...anyways....maybe it's that area of the SR44 they are talking about...trying to picture it in my head back then...well, it's kinda' foggy! LOL...

You know ... as I sit here and think....I believe I remember when they did widen it...but I just never paid attention to how many lanes were on each side....having to drive from the oceanfront to the Navy base everyday....you would think I would remember LOL.

Drove my son to school this morning...over on Constitution, by Pembroke Mall...on Kmart side of the road...in the back there...a new building is going up...dang it...that prob would have been a good spot to detect....day late, dollar short now :(

Try off Newtown Road (the part of the road closer to where you go to Bayside High)....google it >>> they just built two new schools...DIAMOND SPRINGS ELEMENTARY and I believe the other is NEWTON ELEMENTARY (not sure on this one...but they are on the same property). This farm belonged to the Williams Family....when you come into the school area...on the right is where the house use to sit, by the trees....hubby and I detected there last Sunday...VERY VERY TRASHY...if you go there...you will see by the large tree with English Ivy growing on it...where I left some stuff...I found it by that tree and there is a sheet of some kind of metal..large...that appears to have grown into/under that tree. Hubby found at another tree...a pipe that has a tree grown around it!! I only found a couple of memorials, hubby found a 1925 and a 1932? wheatie...but it is VERY VERY TRASHY...this area will be a park (not sure a city park or school park...but will be a park)....check it out! I wish you better luck...I really had NO PATIENENCE that day...I gave up! Yes I did!!! (besides .. I had to go to the bathroom and there wasn't anything near by! LOL)

If you went though the toll plaza it was 25 cent but if you jumped off before it, it was only a dime. Back then alot of people jumped off paid the dime and took bonney road around the toll plaza. I know during holidays the traffic would backup to trashmore waiting to pay the toll.
