Last time I saw one of those monster-sized birds was when I lived in the Connecticut woods; great memories.
Thanks,
Don.......

We have too many..if there is such a thing.
We have many Poplar trees that are standing dead and they love wrecking them lol.
I'll go out in my woods in a bit and show you what they can do to a tree.

That's one of my favorite birds!! I sometimes hear them around but rarely can spot them!

I see some of them out here in the mountains of northeastern Oregon... when I get out there. My old bones don't want to go up hill much anymore!

The surrounding foliage is preventing me from taking a photo of the tree that scares me.
100 foot Poplar tree.
Three foot or more at the base.
Completely hollow at the bottom.
I've been hoping that the wind would take it down, but not yet.

I consider myself lucky to have a couple pairs in the woods less than 100' from my house and I get to see them often. They can make a racket but they are sure magnificent birds! Woody Woodpecker and his raucus laugh were inspired by the pileated woodpecker.

We have lots of them and I love them, they can be quite comical at times too.

In the early mornings I can hear them drilling wood for a mile or more.
For some reason sound echoes around here like being in the Mountains.

What you,re most likely hearing is them "drumming"on a hollow tree section,it,s a territorial thing. They do it here too and you can hear it a long way, especially early on a cold morning.

Thanks!
I didn't know that!
There are at least a dozen of them.
I know one thing, other birds patiently wait their turns at the feeders, I have seen them drill Blue Jays for getting near them.
Pesky Blue Jays are vindictive and mean lol

They are gregarious,if you see one you,ll likely see more. They love suet, and peanuts.Want to see something? If you have a tree with loose bark hide some peanuts underneath and watch the show!Great birds and territorial but not mean, blue jays?Yep!
