place names?

have you ever wondered or maybe already researched how certain beaches, beach communities, beach communities streets etc: got there names? for example.......

treasure shores
golden sands
bottle island
shipyard island
doubloon drive
ten coins
Klondike beach

I imagine that these names were chosen for good reason? during construction or upon initial discovery namesake items were found? anyone feel like adding to my list, I have seen many more!!

Chuck, I think you are on the right track, but I would be looking at old Spanish or English Maps from the Caribbean with names like Treasure Point, Oro Point , Isla de La Plata , etc...

Place names - in the really old stuff it can drive you nuts because many of them were always changing. Same location, just a different name, or spelling, or pronunciation every time you turn around. Makes you wonder how everybody stayed on the same page a great deal of the time.

Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas was famously found by Bob Marx back in 1972.


Check out "Mantanilla Reef" on this old chart from 1794...

In this case, the place name persists to this day:



The Maravillas wreck is VERY close to "Matanilla Shoal"... this name is no mere coincidence...the shoal got its name from the shipwreck. And the shipwreck lay there for at least 200 years before someone put two and two together and started looking for her in the right spot !!!


IMHO there are quite a few potentials out there like this...

Jolly man, the problem I have is that if I actually find treasure " down this way" 200 miles south of the Marvillas wreck they are going to name a settlement after me.....it will probably be called " Gallows Point" ha ha

Still looking down here but with so much hard bottom around most wrecks have been slammed onto the banks by successive hurricanes and are well covered with about 20 feet of sand and until the legal side is sorted I for one am not going to move any yellow stuff, sand that is not gold.

Found a sliver of copper wedged in some rocks the other day that got the heart pounding a bit. I would love to call the Anitiquities people with some GPS numbers and tell em to come show us how to "arch " a wreck

How about Winchester Reef, down in the Florida Keys? Turned out that was the graveyard of HMS Winchester. Charles Brookfield (They All Called It Tropical - Bob Nesmith used to sell that one from his Foul Anchor Archives) explored it after getting a lead from a fisherman. Art McKee worked it, as well. I think some of those cannon were in his Plantation Key "Fortress of Sunken Treasure."

There was a National Geographic article on that wreck - December, 1941 issue.

Two in the San Francisco Bay area are just north of the Golden Gate - Tennessee Cove and Pigeon Point. Both are named for wrecks.

She came to grief with a US Army payroll. I believe it was $187,000. Major Eddy was the paymaster - and his will stated his estate could not be settled until his Government account was cleared.

Too bad it was paper money...

Yes, the ship was found and several gold coins went for $100k, but the safe (I don't believe) was ever located. The salvage partnership then ran into some legal problems and today the wreck is 'off limits' to others.

Before the wreck was found, I wrote an article for Treasure that exposed the myth. I obtained US Government documents that had not seen the light of day since they were written (this was before the Internets, when research was research!). The late Sen. Phil Burton got the Senate to release them to me. They showed Major Eddy packed the paper money "into a safe or iron box."

The gold coins that were found belonged to the passengers. The vessel was heading to the gold fields. I read authors like W.C. Jameson claim million dollar treasures in the 19th Century and it is obvious nonsense. There was a yarn about gold aboard to settle an Indian treaty - hardly based on historical fact.

Had the salvors found the payroll, it would probably still belong to the US Government. Dr. E. Lee Spence told me that currency like that was carefully packed in waterproof materials. Whether it has lasted this long, what is would be worth today if found, etc., Quien Sabe?

I think the Brother Jonathan salvage operation was similar to the SS John Berry effort - a great deal of money was spent, finds were made, but in the end the recoveries didn't recoup the high costs. Good luck to all, ~ The old Bookaroo

Even just street names always catch my interest. "Old stagecoach Rd", "Fairgrounds rd", etc. One I saw recently in this area that I need to research is called "Yankee Camp Rd"

I actually would not be surprised if a majority of the reefs east of the Hawk Channel are named after shipwrecks: Alligator Reef, Crarysfort Reef, Fowey Rocks...

The year before the Brother J. was found, I looked for her. I could only find pipes that turned out to be water pipes from the ship's boilers that connected with the first class area--but, obviously, I never found the vessel. I turned my tapes over to one of the guys who did find her--and he, in turn, showed me his tapes of the vessel including a shot of the interior showing all the sea chests piled, neatly, one on top of the other. He related these sea chests were never salvaged since the money is what they sought first. But as you said, they found only passenger 'loose change' and not the safe. So the safe and all the contents of the vessel are probably still 'in situ'; awaiting a political environment open to the suggestion of a professional arch-type salvage.

If they were, indeed, sea chests, I'd guess they had belonged to the crew and there would be little of value in those. Major Eddy's payroll box was, I'd think, in his cabin. A needle in the haystack that reminds me of Shadow Divers.

Did you visit the Brother Jonathan cemetery in Crescent City?

Let's say you are a beach hunter, and that you did happen to stumble across an old wreck site,.....then what? I mean, for all practical purposes it's completely off limits anyway. I guess the best thing to do is to just keep the info to yourself and let the sea swallow it back up again.

How'd you know. Sure, we found the bones of two camels, some horses and a Newfoundland dog--just as the record disclosed. (Kidding of course).
And yes, the salvage and legal expenses were huge; about $5 million by Dennis Powers' count. Yet they did find at least 1,265 gold coins to cushion that expense. (One is on Ebay now; asking over $10,000.) And from the pics I have seen, the amount of sea chests in view were many more than those of the crew. And that Doblier safe still remains to be found and salvaged..........
