My grandmother's backyard used to be a junkyard a while back (before the 60's, atleast) and I was wondering if, and how to hunt it. I have already done it some, but it is loaded with junk (it is a junkyard!) Would you set the metal detector on all metal, or not? With all metal on, literally every square foot of ground has a beep or 2. I have dug a lot of junk this way, but on the other hand, i have also dug a nice old pot lid. Also found there are bottles and broken glass everywhere. I have uncovered a contact old sprite bottle, which is probably not worth much, but it looks nice, and a couple other chipped old bottles. Any answers or ideas would be great. And by the way, I have a cheap detector, but it has worked so far, so i guess that's what matters. I don't expect to find any coins, but relics are just as fun. Thanks!

Sounds like a good reality show..... Detecting Nightmares!

You definitely don't need all metal because you have way too much metal as it is. To be honest you'd have to pay me by the hour (and quite a bit) to hunt there.

It isn't the amount of money you paid for the detector that gets you the fun, just the fun of adventure. Your grandfathers yard may hold many old pieces of junk and treasure, but digging them up would be a pain in the butt. There is almost to many targets to bother with running a detector.... Even with using disc the many large pieces of metal would set the detector off. It would be better to find places that weren't so heavily deposited with "treasure."
