My husband purchased this stone in Qatar last year. He can't remember the name, and I would love to know what it is. I have seen many stones and can identify them, but this one stumps me. Haven't had any luck finding something that looks like it on line either. The shop owner who sold it to him said it was very rare and only mined in the Middle East. Of course he was selling it, so who knows??
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Thank you for your replies. I'm trying to take it to a gemologist this weekend, will post if I find anything out. I had wondered if it was dyed. It has a bit of iridescence to it like labradorite, and at a certain angle a sapphire-like star. Maybe dyed quartz would have this? I thought not a ruby as my husband would have remembered the name if the shop owner called it that.
