Found this in the area I have been working for a little while now. This came up from under a sidewalk that is getting redone. It is cleanly cut in 1/2 as if this was intentional. The date is 1863. the back says And Provisions Mt Eaton O. I am Assuming it is copper and probably some sort of civil war token. I tried to do a little research but came up empty handed. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

It's a Civil War "store card"--a token advertising the store printed on the other side.

Good find!

It's one of two, virtually identical varieties issued by, "D. GIAUGE / DEALER IN / GROCERIES / AND PROVISIONS / MT. EATON / O."

As far as I know, Giague was the only Mt. Eaton, Ohio merchant with his own Civil War store cards.

Fuld rates these tokens as R4 (200-500 known) and R5 (75-200).

Kanzinger's price guide (2002) values them at $65-85 in Fine to Very Fine condition.

Civil war era store tokens were privately minted between 1862-1864 because of the scarcity of government issed cents during the war. On June 8, 1864 the government passed a law that forbade all private coinage.

It looks like the previous owner of this token wanted to "double" his money. ;D
