Recently at an auction I picked up this pocket watch. It is 14k and made in the late 1920's. It is an Illinois Autocrate with the chain and matching mother of pearl pen knife. I paid $66.00, righteous buy right? When I got home I opened the back plate and learned that the watch was engraved. "Charles E. Rogers 1927". Hm-mm, interesting...maybe a retirement gift? So I decide to google the name and the date and only one true result comes up. A wiki on an actor in the early years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rogers_(actor) Get this, he won his first Oscar in...you guessed it, 1927. Could the watch be a gift commemorating his win at the Oscars? How can I authenticate the watch? How could it have made its way to Scotia NY? Please if you have any information that can help me, SPEAK UP!! :icon_sunny:

If you took those pics with your camera, look for the yellow flower in the menu somewhere, it stands for macro, click it and re-take your pics......NGE

go to ebay and check out this item #120383688686. You got a fine deal!

I can't identify the watch, but having done genealogy for many years, I can tell you that there are likely many, many Charles E Rogers out there. I live in Minnesota and checked births just for the heck of it and found at least two Charles E Rogers within the time period and I'm sure you'll find them in every state. Gold watches were a very common retirement gift, but I think you'll have a very difficult time connecting it to a specific Charles E Rogers.

Wow,you got a deal with just it being 14kt alone

Yeah its going to be a challenge, but what are the odds that some of them got it engraved 1927?

Speak up...OK you got it.
I am not an expert on pocket watches but have handled a few. If it says 14K gf (gold filled) it is plated, not solid gold. A watch only has premium for gold if it is solid gold.
Next, the name Charles Rogers is a medium to common name and I noticed you left out the middle initial when mentioning the actor. If you could find out the actor's middle initial you could rule out that your watch has a connection to that particular celebrity figure. Lastly, i haven't researched this but is the watch an "autocrat", I cant imagine a watch being called an autocrate.
all the luck in the world.
