Hi guys and gals!! I just dug this the other day in the historical downtown Wilmington, NC. I've tried to do some research on it but I can't find anything about it. A friend of mine said it my be from the War of 1812?? Is there anyone out here that can help??

I have no idea what you have there but it certainly warrants some investigation. Good luck!

One thing you have going for you is that it is an unfouled anchor. That will narrow it down quite a bit as to what branch of service it was.

It is from a Revolutionary War naval neck stock. I believe the neck stock was made of linen, and there were two of these sewn on, one on each end. I will Google around for some more info, but I needed the ID.

Woot woot!

it looks like the back of a Mariner's pocket watch, or a Mariner's compass

I had to copyright it. Some guy with a German ring was trying to steal it. At least that is what my attorneys are saying.

I have seen these in publications before. I have seen examples recovered individually, and I have also seen them on the neck stock, or cravat.

The first time I saw them was in an old issue of 'North South Trader's Civil War' magazine. They were in the "What Is It?" section. A fellow had found one of the stamped brass pieces with an anchor at a homestead in Tennessee. I believe the business of Stone Mountain Relics of Georgia provided the magazine with a picture of a complete neck stock in a subsequent issue. Those examples were identical to the one pictured in this thread.

I know they are out there. I looked for too long today, and I do not need my girlfriend getting jealous over Google.

I will try again later.
Im placing another five on Plehbah.
