Hi guys and gals!! I just dug this the other day in the historical downtown Wilmington, NC. I've tried to do some research on it but I can't find anything about it. A friend of mine said it my be from the War of 1812?? Is there anyone out here that can help??

I know and understand :D

I've been searching, searching...

Maybe contact "North South Trader's Civil War" magazine?

I'm curious about this as I found one very similar recently. Not as big as this one. I will try to get a pic.

I am checking in here, I am still looking through back issues to find a picture.

In the meantime I can provide an e-mail address for the former Stone Mountain Relics. While the e-mail address is for "sales@", I looked around the website and still believe this would be the correct address to use.

It would be worth sending them a picture, and seeing if they will at least verify my identification. I think they would not mind at all. It might be quicker than waiting for me to sort through my piles of magazines a few at a time.

Here is the address: sales@stonemountainantiquemall.com

I will keep looking in the meantime.

I like your new avatar Mr. American Plehbah :icon_thumright:

No luck on finding the magazine :D I know the feeling well. I were/am looking for an W & E Treasures article on Confederate boot heel plates and so far still no luck ;D

I almost forgot to add pics of the one I found. I'm not sure if it is the same thing or not. Mine is much smaller being roughly 15/16" dia. Very worn. Can't make out any details on either side.

Yours looks like it has 3 factory holes and the other two were punched later with a nail.

All holes are exactly the same. None were punched. They still have dirt in them. I haven't fully cleaned the piece yet.

Instead of cravat could it be a brass plate for an old fly fishing reel?

What ever this was, it was rivetted to tin or other sheet metal. The rivets are crimped on both sides, yet the depth is too little for anything but thin sheet metal, and as well, there are still rust remains present which suggests tin..

Also the type of corrosion on the back (the kind you find in an enclosed area) suggests it was exposed to water. To have found this with the corrosion being so apparent on the back, while the front has an entirely different corrosion, suggests to me anyway that the metal it was mounted on rusted or deteriorated away not all that many years ago.

There seems to even be a small bit of the original substance it was mounted on remaining under one of the rivets, and if you chip it loose and try a magnet on it you might be able to narrow down what material the original object was made of.
