Hi everybody! Another great find (I hope) from the back yard. Please tell me that is a musket ball!?!?! It looks so right as per Google. I am like a little kid over here! Cant believe it! Oldest find ever.
Also getting into some other good stuff after working this patch for a few weeks... Note the watch, seems old as per the corrosion. First bullet shell as well! All from the back yard still. Not pictured is a wheat penny that I forgot to include. First find of the dig! Completely ecstatic about that ball though! Hope it’s a true piece of history.
Thanks for looking and good luck.:hello2:
Kenny :)
P.S. Tried to get a better shot of the ball with no luck. Hope you can see it enough.

Nice finds kfetters.

Looks like a round ball to me way to go

Dig until your arm falls off

Can't tell much from your photo. Is it lead? Please give exact measurements in hundred's of an inch, like .575, or .490, as an example. Does the ball have a mold line around it? Can you see a spru -- which is an indication of where the molten lead was poured into the mold and cut off?

:hello: :icon_thumright: Whether or not it's a musket ball, with your super energy & enthusiasm, you'll be digging lots of good stuff for years to come! Looking forward to seeing your next post. Let us know if it turns out to be a musket ball. Adios! Andi

Cool find but to properly ID it the experts here will need more specs. I"ll betcha it is though!

It looks like it is iron from the pic. Most lead that has been in the ground for a long time has a white coating of lead oxide on it. Does it attract to a magnet?? Is it rusty?? Old round balls (I don't refer to them as musket balls since it is impossible to tell if they were from a musket, rifle, shotgun, or pistol) were lead, not iron or steel. There is also no way to positively date them since they have been used for 300 years and are still used today. Unless an old lead ball is found on a known battlefield it was most likely a hunting round and has little historical interest except to the finder.

Hi everyone! Thank you all for the support and feedback. I've gotten a few better pics for ya. It's unfortunately not looking good for the "round ball" theory. I think it may be iron with a chrome plating after cleaning it up. My best guess so far is a ball from one of those clicker clacker things I used to see back in the 80's. The ones where they had 5 or so hanging in a row and you'd start it a one end and it would go back and forth through all the balls. I remember people would have them on their desks.
It was still a VERY exciting find though. That feeling is the best!! I went out hunting for another 5 hours after that amped up on adrenaline. Found another wheat penny, another CTA token, and a World of Wonder token from 1992 amongst other things. Fantastic!!
Thank you very much again everybody and good luck :) Kenny

Kenny, it does look like a ball bearing, but don't worry, keep hunting and you will be finding that cool old historical stuff sooner or later and when you do that exciting feeling will last a long time!!
