Not very good pics, but my guess is hemetite. Try taking pics in natural sunlight and take the pics dry, wetting the stones will make it more difficult to identify.
 

I agree they could be coated with mercury as that was used in some mining operations to recover gold. The darker stones look like Obsidian.

Gold and mercury have a tremendous attraction for each other. That is why miners used mercury in their process. If ordinary rocks had the same attraction, the process wouldn't work. Therefore I would say those rocks are not coated with mercury. Just a lay persons thought.
 

My guess is apache tears.
