The topic of marking coins is well debated on here. Let's get some numbers in the polls. Personally I don't mind as long as it's not a coin worth collecting. So I'm saying 'Marking is okay.' There are too many contingencies to make them all an option.

I would never waste my time doing it, I'd rather be doing more boxes. Inevitably you're going to get some of the same coins eventually whether you see your mark or not does it matter? No.

If you're going to drop a bank chain because of a lack of silver you're going to do that regardless of marked coins.

If you see tons of your marks but have boxes producing silver are you going to dump that chain? No of course not.

I suppose some people think it will have a "mental effect" scaring or frustrating noobs, maybe this is true, but anyone who reads this board or knows its out there or has a shred of persistence won't be phased by marked coins. Someone said in a recent thread their father in law was frustrated with the marked coins, but it was really because he bought that persons dumps.....an educated CRH'er would not make that mistake and even if they did wouldn't be frustrated by it. Thats just lack of research on the F.I.L.

It is technically against the law as well to deface coins.

Bottom line though if someone is spending time marking coins in my territory it is less time they are out searching in my territory, so go ahead waste your time!

There's no voting option for "waste of time"

I would call that indifferent. Not caring due to laziness lol

Marking coins is a waste of time. I really don't care about it though. If someone wants to deface a coin I say let them, doesn't bother me at all. Doesn't help you at all either. Time wasted marking could be used to find silver.

i dont do it but it sure is annoying finding them... but so is buying a skunked box of half dollars from brinks... so either way it is part of the hobby

happy hunting guys

I hardly CRH anymore but I'm indifferent to it. I never marked any coins as I never saw a reason to and felt it not worth the time. I have to say that I don't get why some are so impassioned about not marking them.

We'll pour them out and bang them around (is this how they (half dollars) get worn? They don't circulate much and probably not used much in casinos anymore) but putting a mark across them is verboten?

Marking the coins is a waste of time and energy:-) The coins you bring to the bank are going to be sent back to a counting house, dumped into a huge bin, get recounted and placed into new wrappers. Marked coins turn up all the time and I don't pay attention to them. I always find 1974 D halves, for example that are marked as searched and yet I have found 1974 D DDO coins in the same roll as a marked coin:-)

While I'm at it, (I shouldn't tell you this :-) You should be looking for doubled dies on all 90% silver, 40% silver and 1971-1977 dated halves. I am not talking about machine doubled stuff. There are whopper Doubled dies, both obverse and reverse on the dates in the range mentioned.

Have Fun,
foundinrolls
