“Portraits of the Past is a collection of stories, tales and legends about the colorful history of central California. . . .
In the fall of 1970, s short tale of lost treasure in Monterey appeared in LOCALE Magazine, a publication of
Monterey Savings and Loan Association. A few more followed and in the winter 72/73 issue, “Portraits of the Past”
became a regular feature of the magazine.”

21 stories, some pertain to treasure. For example, The Sanchez Treasure, The Monterey Peninsula’s Hidden Wealth,
and A Century Late Rush for Gold. The last article is about a well-known discovery of gold coins in Monterey.
Several books, magazines, and newspapers report the find of 20-dollar gold coins. The article not only includes
photographs of the crowd digging on the property, but also color photographs of some of the estimated 400 gold
coins that were recovered.
