Poss countefeit 1800's 50C coin

Was told this dig was a counterfeit due to the look but have no idea. The date looks to have been altered or something. Unlike the nice one posted below what's your thoughts on this find?

Yes, it looks to be a counterfeit, likely a cast non silver coin that was silver plated. In the world of counterfeits what collectors want is examples where counterfeit dies were created and struck the coin, and the silver coins often tend to have some quality to them, just are a lighter weight, of a less % of silver to cheat the weight. So I don't think your coin will amount to much more than a cool detecting find.

Out of curiosity did you dig that cuz it's really rare to find fake coins in the ground

Duke when I dug it and saw what it was I was on cloud 9 due to it being my first big old silver....when the guys started to fill me in on it I was down but then thought, how many of these will I ever find. Maybe that happy dance will be repeated again some day on real silver

you could also chuck it on a scale to compare weights...
