It's a rivet, used in horsetack, cartridge boxes and other leather goods.

Yep, it's a rivet. Still a good civil war find, though. Keep the finds coming!!

I call them knapsack rivets but all answers given are correct also.

yep its a rivet -- used to hold goods together like tents and leather goods and backpacks ect , ect --a very typical type find at a civil war camp area

Yeap, I find hundreds of these leather rivets every year. Multiples on most outings.
They hardly changed in hundreds of years 1700s-1900s.
No CW over here mate. (No-way of telling)

Any idea of its age?

Any idea of its age?

Just told you the date range, there configuration never changed for 200 years +. So its anyone's guess, so if you want a guess it looks aged enough to be 19th C.

I've even seen these on circa 1810 leather fire buckets, just one of thousands of uses on leather. But the majority are horse related.

In a pinch, it could have been used as a cufflink :laughing7:

often one has to "group" date finds ...while the rivet could be from a broad time frame --if its found along with a lot of civil war camp type items --odds are good that it too is of civil war era ... common sense wise

Totally disagree.
Only artifacts from a sealed archaeological layer are from the same period.
Otherwise my Coke cans are Roman.

like I said - in the area along with (as in the same basic layer / strata /depth of find )-- I also said its a good chance --not 100%

the item had to actually have a chance of existing during the time frame --so the "roman" coke can bit is of course nonsense .. I said "along with " as in a similar strata /depth of find ...but the mere fact a item is deeper or shallower can not be the sole factor -- farm fields are often plowed ..so a roman era item when found on the surface --is still a roman era item --just like a deeper roman era find would be ..

Yep, a rivet. Found one just a few days ago still in the leather. Just knew it was going to be a flat button!
