Hi everyone, I found this 1972 D penny in an old park and it is different. Take a close look at the nose. It looks like it is a strike error. The nose is long and drawn out as if there was a problem with the die. At this park I have found tons of clad and 24 silver coins including a 1932D Washington ( KEY DATE ) and a 1916 Merc. ( KEY DATE ) but it's to worn on the back to tell if it's a D, and 32 wheaties along with an assortment of other items at this park and I am only 1/2 done. I was just checking the pennies when I noticed it. There is not another mark on the coin except that one. When you look at the penny under a 20X loop it looks like it was stamped that way. The only reason I caught it was it was a 1972D. All I have done to it is clean it a little as the coins at this park come out in great shape. It would really be cool if it was a mint error. Some of the 1972 D's were double died on the obverse. Is it possible this could be a variation of another error? A 1972 D double die is a $50.00 coin, could this one be worth more?

Re: Possible error coin found

hmmmmm never seen anything like it ,reminds me of a little wooden boy.

Re: Possible error coin found

It is an altered coin. I recently saw a post in the Coin Roll Hunting area that had a half that looked like that. Can't find the post now of course :P

Re: Possible error coin found

It looks like damage to me. Look on the reverse ~ directly behind where Lincoln's nose is ~ I bet you'll find a flattened area from blunt force trama!

Re: Possible error coin found

Hobo Lincoln? ;D

Re: Possible error coin found

Looks like the infamous 1972-D Pinocchio Cent. And i thought it was Nixon who could not tell a lie. LOL
Nice find though.

That's an odd marking.
I don"t see how it could have been a double die.

Here is a pic of the other one on the Coin Roll Hunting forum"

Someone is doing this as a joke, maybe even sellin em? Who knows, people are crazy ::)

Re: Possible error coin found

And here I thought Lincoln never told a lie.

It looks like a vertical cut from his eye down to his upper lip and then that portion smeared outward away from his head.

Like a tack or something got in the way of the stamping.

Good eyes you have.

I think you are telling a story, because your pennies nose is growing.
LOL! JK!
Nice find, it could be a scratch of some sort. The words Liberty, sure look a little smudged.
HMMM, I don't know.

Re: Possible error coin found

THe silver one was made with Photoshop, but thte penny looks real and pretty clean with no other marks than the nose.

Re: Possible error coin found

How would I go about getting this coin checked out?

Re: Possible error coin found

You could start by going to a local coin dealer and if they do not have a definative answer you might try http://www.anacs.com/ and see if they can help.

The Dime looks photoshopped, but the penny looks like the metal is smeared. The question is...? die damage? or after production damage?
You'll probably never know unless you find/see another one like it somewhere. Definitely a conversation piece though.

This is a true error coin the one in my error book is a 1962 but it looks the same.
It is what is called a blow hole a form of lamination error these are rare errors. I think it could be worth more than a double die. I collect coins and I would talk to PGCS ANACS or a coin dealer you trust. This is not a joke as some have suggested...............Doug

ANACS is the only service that will certify that coin. Because it is dug they will label it as cleaned or environmental damage, but they will label it with the error that it is. It is easier than I thought to submit coins for grading. I have a half dollar I found CRH'ing last month that I sent in. They have labeled it MS-64 with a "struck through debris" designation. I don't know the value but it is much rarer than struck through cloth. The damage went all the way to clad layer, it is very cool. I would send your coin in to ANACS and see what happens. Good luck...Ryan
