Just curious. If a meteorite hits your house or car and causes damage, would you be able to keep the meteorite or would your insurance company claim it if the paid for the repair?

No, an insurance company would not seek to claim a meteorite if they had paid out on a damage claim. It's really no different than a tree falling on your house. The tree wouldn't somehow become 'theirs'.

On the other hand, there may be substantial value in a meteorite vs a tree. Insurance companies take ownership of vehicles they deem too expensive to fix, so...

Insurance companies don't provide insurance for our protection, but they do it because they make money from it. Here, they will not provide coverage in areas/regions/states they find not profitable. If they feel they can minimize their losses from a payout, I believe they would claim it. Just my suspicion though.

Yes, but that’s not the same situation. Insurance companies compensate you for damage caused to your property and only take ownership of that property if it cannot be economically repaired, paying out an appropriate replacement cost.
They would be entitled to claim ownership of any materials that were replaced to fix damage to your house (if it were worthwhile) but not the meteorite that caused the damage.

That be a nice surprise after having a hole shot through your roof. If it does pan out as being an official meteorite I then wonder what someone would be willing to pay to have it? I would think a meteorite that made the news, plus knowing exactly where and what day it hit a house on earth would bring a premium price.
