Possible nutting stone or grindstone?

I was exploring the local river in Western mass looking for antique bottles. When I came across this stone with a perfect divot in it. Could it be a grinding stone or some kind of crucible? Sorry I only have one pic. If a possibility I will go back and retrieve it. Thanks in advance for the help.- Justin

It does look like one pics of it cleaned up a bit would help determine for sure
 

Sure looks like it might be an nutting stone. Often there are several divots. Check the other side. Looks pretty big.
 

Found along a river? I'd say the chances are higher that it's a broken piece of bedrock with a boil hole that started to form.
 

I reckon it's a mortar.
 

Retrieve and clean! If it isn't natural, then you have another cool piece to display. If it is natural, then you have gained more knowledge to decipher next time.
