possible penny error? need help..

Hey folks, i was searching pennies the other day and when i empty the penny rolls, they go onto a hard wood surface... i was emptying the roll and heard a strange high "ping", thinking of a newer canadian cent, out pops a 1979 american cent... it looks like it is thinner and struck poorly(partial "struck thru grease??" on the back.

a normal pre 1982 copper weighs 3.11g, now my scale has accuracy to the 0.1g, so all the coppers weigh up 3.1g.

This cent weighed up 2.5/2.6g borderline, i am guessing, but not 100% sure, is it possible to have been struck on a canadian penny planchet?

The US doesn't mint Canadian coins, so it couldn't be struck on a Canadian planchet, maybe some other country's planchet though.

i kinda ran over the cord to connect the scanner to the computer, so that's broken, ha. i'll try and get one this week... the wheels on my office chair got in the way...

thanks... it's clearly a copper year, 1979, but it does not sound like a US copper or zinc when dropped, but like one of those canadian cents from the 80's when dropped.

The US doesn't mint Canadian coins, so it couldn't be struck on a Canadian planchet, maybe some other country's planchet though.

Did that scanner brake again? There are too many wheels in my office too, trying to avoid rock'n'rolling while in my seat, but it's hard to resist.

1979 US cent = 95% copper, 5% zinc
1979 Canadian cent = 98% copper, 1.75% tin, 0.25% zinc

hah, turned out the scanner was only unplugged last time, like i said, i am horrible with this stuff! it's working now, but the cord connecting the scanner to the computer is crushed, therefore i cannot transfer immages. darn...

i came across one similar to what you talking about with yours. mine sounded like a canadian penny but it was not. it was ( cant remember the year) a copper penny cent from the 60's. took it to my coin dealer and he said it looked like it was missing the copper core but that it was a real penny not fake. not a key date so that ruled out a fake.

I have several pennies that are lightweight. I have never really seen a market for them so I just send them back to the wild blue yander!
