My son and I did an end of the year hunt this morning, and besides getting a few coins (1789-1816 era) and some buttons, he dug this iron relic, which I think is a TRIVET of some type, but have not seen one from that era (or earlier) that was solid like this one is. Just not sure being a TRIVET or not. Front and Back photos included and one of him holding it for size reference.
My guess for now is possible teapot trivet

Trivet would have been my first guess as well. Unless it is half of some type of mold.

I think this is part of a wafer iron.

Don, way to choose the coldest day of the year to get out! I considered heading out this morning but it was just too darned cold. Nice find though

My son has not cleaned the wafer iron yet, but I was looking at the one photo of it and since the appraiser said they often had patriotic scenes, I looked and sure looks like a bird, possibly an Eagle in the upper center of the iron. Did a negative of the photo and cropped the area where it looks like a bird.

Added: My son thinks it is a Dove, I think than it is one nasty looking dove, :dontknow: the beak seems a bit big for a non-raptor, but is hard to determine as it stands right now. Never saw a non raptor posed with wings in that postion.

I noticed the bird design the first time I looked, but design looks similar to buttons with an eagle holding arrows in its talons.
