Victorian gets mentioned.
Seems early , but not for origins.

My wild guess is , in use still during era of plaster and lathe finished interior homes due to the fun of trying to secure a fastener into such construction without making a mess of plaster coating. It can be like beating a rubber drum trying to seat a nail. Or if you hit between laths it wants to crumble instead of hold. I been there!

There were metal rails used in some places too I believe. Maybe like curtain rods to display things hung from?
