Most of these have been cherry picked from literally thousands of this type scraper I've acquired.
I have found many more than shown here, but from my part of the state, the material and resulting quality for the most part just doesn't compare.

The amount of scrapers in the Dakotas is truly amazing. I have several thousand, and have been cherry picking them to build a frame. I also enjoy looking at the technology under a scope.

I really like those. It is amazing how many are out there in ND. almost ridiculous.... And now seeing your pictures, it just helps confirm the ridiculousness...i like the more classic near tear drop shaped ones. Let me know if and when u get too many!!!

Thanks for reviving this thread, especially nice to see the posts from Steve Larson, I have some of his KRF flint scrapers he sent me along with many other of the Mandan artifacts he frequently found, I miss that gentleman. He always had a kind word, peaceful outlook and fantastic artifacts.

Most of the thumbnail scrapers shown so far are pretty large.



Must have been of small stature.

Still waiting to find one made from quartz. Visually, they look like they would be more difficult to find for some reason.

I think your runner up for smallest thumbnail scraper.

I love this little scraper. I hiked way up on this hill that was kinda a lookout, and there it was. I posted it before and it was identified as Trout Creek chert from Central Colorado! I have quite a few but this one is one of my favorites!

I see at least 6 different colors.

I would love to know how it was treated back then.
Answers we may never know. Could it have been a gift?
Used only at special get togethers as a way to show off?
Just another disposable tool that is pretty looking?

I feel it was something other than an ordinary disposable tool.

How big is it? Looks to be the size of a quarter?
