How do you tell the age of this pottery?

From what I've read if it has a glaze it's contact period and if not then older Your shards look like they are fabric or paddle stamped...here is a site that can help you with the age http://shapiro.anthro.uga.edu/GIP/index.php/home.html use the "Quick Key" link.

You can also tell the age by what they used to 'temper' the clay. To my recollection, sand/dirt/gravel is older and shell (oyster, for instance) is newer. You have nice examples of pattern. Keep looking- there's the other part of that bowl out there somewhere! HH Yakker
