1/4/09 I rescued this from the edge of falling off a sand bar into the water! I'm not sure if it is Native American or early settlers but it's cool! Any Thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Yep, definately native American!! Your really really need to got back to that location and see if there may be some more of it. Where did it come from? I know its not Caddoan or Mississipian...are you in Ohio maybe?
Nice find though.

Thanks!
I'm somewhere in the land of OZ!;D Don't want to give my exact locale because of other hunters.8) especially now! It was washed up by the river, I literally rescued it from falling in the river from a sand bar! I was very fortunate I was the first one down to this particular sand bar it has been very cold around here and the river is constantly up and down. Then about 1 hour later three other hunters showed up ruined my day! >:( Oh well. I'm sure I still got the best find of the day ! ;D

That's a fantastic find. I love finding pottery especially the cooler pieces like that handle.

Sometimes it has to do with the firing of the pottery. I've seen some with a black slip on it before, and sometimes its from having been used to cook with.
Here's one from a couple miles of my house here in Bowie County.

1/10/09 I went back to the sand bar that I found that piece at the top on and found this shard today! It was just laying on top of the ground about 100yds from the other, the water had gone dropped quite a bit.I tried to get it In Situ but it was so cold my camera wouldn't work >:(
