This is probably the best piece of pottery I have found ever. I found it in the river when I was kicking around in the sand. Is there anyway to tell what time period it came from?

That's some good finds:thumbsup:I have a book on dating pottery some where I will try to find it. From what I see it is made of I will guess woodland period.

I have a I.D. site I use but there is just so many different designs on the site. Your state should have a pottery site on the web. Its a nice looking piece of pottery.

What state?
The temper is crushed stone and possibly sand as well.
Sometimes you can go by just the "designs" but it usually is a combination of things that may or may not include the type of pattern on the piece.
Many are very similar.
Iowa?

I'm Just going to go with Iowa.
I would ID that as "black sand" type pottery.
From late in the early woodland period to early in the middle woodland.
Leaning towards middle woodland.
They mixed several methods of decorating the exteriors ..like cord marks, incised lines and dashes along with punctuating.

Yes I found it in central Iowa. Thanks for the info! I'm excited to go back out and look for more pieces!

when you know the type then you can look at the points made from the same period and know what to look for when you go back.

I have found a point and a couple blades there but don't know what kind they are.

Nice piece RW,
I'd say your pottery should date back 1500 years or so, nice find...congrats.
Good stuff, thanks.

The one on the right looks Woodland if it is a Bi-Point
The one on the left has a Archaic look to it.

The notched point is probably a woodland koster and the other I think is a small blade.
