Pre 1854 Brooklyn Police Button & C1823-1865 Sporting Button
Hit the field the last two days. Yesterday I found this Hammond Turner & Sons (1823-1865) Sporting Button, along with a toasted fat Indian Head Penny and a few other flat buttons. Today, after about 2 1/2 hours, and only a few decent signals, I came up with this neat Brooklyn Police button late in the hunt. As I was cleaning it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it still has most of its gilt. The Brooklyn Police Department was abolished in 1854 when the newly formed Metropolitan Police Force took its place. The back mark on the button seems to be Waterbury Button Company, which was established in 1849. So it seems that the button dates from between 1849 and 1854.
