All Treasure Hunting
This weekend a US friend of my Dad is visiting & he wants to try detecting again. Problem is that last visit he tried for the first time & got a good Roman coin at the end of a 30 minute hunt (that was all the time he had spare). So his expectations maybe high & we have no good fields to do at the moment. Therefore, today we tried to track down an area worth hunting.
Started on a massive Barley stubble field which had a Roman Road running across it but could only find bits & pieces (best find a Medieval cauldron foot).
So went to a field which was a bit roughly raked but was one of the first Roman Sites we discovered 10 years ago. Problem is we have sucked off every nail & signal going, I was lucky to get our only scrappy coin this month!
So we are still unsure where to go :-\

Could you work the edges of some of your promising sites? Around here we usually have a mowed swath 5 -15 ft around agricultural plots. How about all of those public foot paths? If all else fails, you could knock on the gate of Winsor Palace. I'm sure the Queen wouldn't mind you tearing up her rose gardens in the name of public relations and tourism. ;D

Good Luck, it is always hard to try and put people onto quality finds, especially if they think it is going to be easy.

We are not allowed to dig on the grass edges as the farmer could lose his EU subsidies, your not even allow to drive on it :dontknow:

We may just take him to new land & show him the realities of Metal Detecting in the UK. ie. the hard work of hours of digging for very little...

I forgot that you guys lived in the land of rules and order.

How about constuction sites? There must be some bare dirt somewhere.

The coast?

Maybe if you show him reality, next time he'll want to go see Stonehenge and Woodhenge (my personal favorite) like everyone else. :D

Good luck!

Construction sites here are off limits as you need a Health & Safety certificate to even walk around one, as well as wearing PPE.
The coast :P

Yes, he will get a dose of reality ;D

What about going near to the place where that Treasure Trove of Roman coins was found. Sure to be something near bye.

U.

You can always plant a few hammered silver coins and point him to the field >:D :laughing7: JK all that stuff in the ground there you should find something Good luck  Dd60

those are some interesting relics .. take it easy on the yank ... :laughing7:

Do you have any silver US coins?? I would plant those for him to find... Then tell him he has his detector set to US instead of UK.

Ya know Mding is like fishing and hunting and when I take someone out to hunt, fish or MD I never make promises as to the catch. That way no one ends up disappointed. I will take them to my best spots but there is never a promise of capturing!!!!!

Understand, although we have been blessed with sites that we could have promised stuff without worry of disappointed (due to our research & hunting skills), not that we have promised finds though. What ever happens he will see a harder side to this game as we try a new field with no idea of where to go

personal protection equipment...hardhat, safety vest, safety glasses, etc
OK thanks, now I know. We have to wear all the stuff here too when we are helping with a dig...
When we helped out searching in Amsterdam for the North-South tram tunnel we looked this way (but no glasses), it was cold too, in the winter....I even built a hard hat with the headphones inside... (blue helmet)

brrr -- looks cold ----bangers and mash and scrumpy time -- or--- bubble and squeak and a pint or two of new castle ale. (if in britain)

How come you know about "bubble and squeak" and "bangers and mash" Ivan?... :dontknow: Have you been to the UK?

U.

many many times --i used to work as a merchant seaman * (on the "sealand" line containerships)-- came into felixstowe , while there would go ashore out and about.

a man has to eat when ashore , you know -- sausages and mashed potatoes --"bangers and mash " with a good cider (scrumpy) is nice -- so is bubble and squeak with a couple pints of new castle ale ---for a snack a bit of stilton cheese and friut with a bit of port is good too. :icon_thumright:

as a merchant seaman (chef) --i've ate my way around the world in many many countries.

remember these great tunes?

I AM A CIDER DRINKER----- I GOT A BRAND NEW COMBINE HARVESTER
